TWO young sisters were killed and their dad is fighting for his life after fire ripped through their home today.
The bodies of the youngsters, aged 14 and 11, were discovered at the house in Lisle Road, South Shields, after the blaze broke out at 1am.
Their parents, both aged 37, were taken to hospital.
The father was said to be critically ill in Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary's burns unit, but the mother has been discharged.
Neighbours told of the desperate bid to rescue the family as flames ripped through the property in Lisle Road, South Shields, at about 1am.
As thick black smoke engulfed the house, neighbours the girls' parents managed to jump from the first floor of the terraced property.
The father then tried to battle against the blaze to climb back into the house and attempt to rescue his daughters, but was driven back by smoke and flames.
A neighbour said: "The dad was banging on my door screaming for help.
"Me and another neighbour tried to help him get into the house, but the smoke was too thick and the heat was too much, and there was just nothing we could do. It all happened so quickly."
Another neighbour dragged a pair of ladders to the scene to help, while another contacted the emergency services, who were on the scene within minutes.
But the young girls, who were on the first and second floors of the terraced property, could not be rescued.
The deaths sent shockwaves through the close-knit community, who described the family as "absolutely lovely", and "would do anything for anyone".
"You don't know what to say.
"My husband was at the window, and I just heard the mother screaming.
"It looked like they'd jumped out of the window.
"We phoned the fire brigade but they were already on their way.
"The father was coming out of the back window, trying to get the mother out of the window. It looked like they'd both managed to jump.
"There was a flashing flame, black smoke pouring out of the window.
"It seemed like people were coming from everywhere to help. It makes your stomach turn.
"One man opposite the family's house, who has just recently moved in to the street went over with ladders to help."
"I looked out of the window and saw a commotion and the mother being taken away in an ambulance.
"They are an absolutely lovely family.
"Every Christmas they invited all the children in the street into their house and used to have a display.
"The fire brigade were in the loft for some time and seemed to be concentrating on that area."
"The parents are absolutely lovely people.
"I can't believe this, I am still in shock."
" I was woken by the sounds of the fire engine and saw the lights flashing.
"When I looked out of the window I was shocked. I thought 'what is going on here?'
"The girl next door to me said there had been a terrible accident, there was ambulance, police cars, fire engines, everyone was out.
"The family have only been living here about three or four years. He has done a lot of work to it.
"The dad even helped remove spray paint from my fence, which had been damaged by vandals.
"He is a lovely man and they were such a happy family who would help anybody.
"I can't believe these two little girls have died."
